Recertification among PBO diplomates is a process of peer review wherein certificate holders are asked to present cases for discussion to encourage learning and to provide a venue for a free exchange of ideas.

All those who were conferred a PBO Diplomate status prior to June 2018 were granted lifetime certificates with no expiration dates and henceforth will be considered lifetime PBO diplomates.

In June 2018, the PBO passed a resolution making recertification a necessary exercise.

Two Types of Recertification Processes:

A.  Voluntary:

For PBO Diplomates who were granted diplomate status prior to June 2018 and received lifetime certificates with no expiration date.  Recertification for all those falling under this category becomes voluntary.

B.  Mandatory:

For PBO Diplomates who were granted diplomate status after June 2018.  Recertification for all those falling under this category becomes mandatory.

Each diplomate is now required to undergo recertification every ten years starting in 2019.  From then on, each diplomate certificate issued upon successful completion of recertification examinations will have a validity of ten years and may be renewed thereafter.  The Diplomate can begin the recertification process one year before the expiration date and will have one year past the date of expiration to complete the process.  With the successful recertification, the diplomate will be given a new certificate with an expiration date of ten (10) years from the original expiration date, regardless of when the recertification process is completed.  Failure to recertify will result in the temporary suspension of the diplomate title until recertification is completed.

Two Modes of Recertification:

1. Case Presentation

a. Case Requirement:

One (1) case fully treated by the Diplomate from his/her clinical orthodontic practice may be presented during designated recertification dates.

The presented case must be initiated and finished within the past ten (10) years from taking the examination.

The case must have a Discrepancy Index (DI) criteria of at least 10 and above.

b. Records must include pre- and post-treatment records:

      • Panoramic radiographs (or CBCT scan)
      • Cephalometric radiographs
      • Orthodontic study models
      • Extra-oral/Intra-oral photographs

c. Examination Process:

On designated dates, the presenter will present the approved case with computed discrepancy index submitted to the examination committee prior to the presentation.

The case with complete pre- and post-orthodontic records will be shown to the entire board for peer review.  A power point presentation of the case not exceeding ten minutes will be required.  Peer review and discussion related to the case will follow immediately after.

There will be no pass or fail grade.  Rather, it will be an opportunity for free discourse and knowledge sharing among peers with similar capabilities.

Pursuant to an approved board resolution, those who opt to do lecture presentations of their cases may be eligible to apply for recertification status, whether voluntary or mandatory.

2. Accumulation of CPD points

The applicant must accumulate 40 CPD (Continuing Professional Development) points following the different categories listed below.  These points must be earned within the next 10 years following the issuance of the certificate (for certificates issued beginning 2018).  Diplomates holding lifetime certificates who still want to be recertified must earn the required CPD points within 10 years prior to recertification.
