Ten years ago, I stood before this august body as a new diplomate along with Dr. Marievic Reyes and Dr. Dennis Lim. Today, I am extremely honored to stand here again and accept the chairmanship of Philippine Board of Orthodontics.
I am earnestly grateful and humbled for the trust and confidence I have received from you because I am very sure that there are other diplomates who are more capable to lead the PBO. Together, we will continue to inspire more Orthodontists to take the four phases of examination and eventually, become diplomates. As of to date, there are 24 diplomates. Prospectively, we will work on increasing this number.
Additionally, we will continue to pursue accreditation of universities offering Orthodontic programs. Our goal is to elevate the standard of Orthodontics in the country in line with the WFO guidelines and be recognized globally as a certifying body.
In retrospect, I was hesitant to accept the PBO leadership. The tasks ahead of me seem unimaginable at first. However, with the dedication and support of the Executive Council and all of our diplomates, I believe that two years will be a walk in the park.
Let me tell you that it is not just my sole effort that has brought me here. I would like to thank my mentors, for whom I have the deepest respect: Dr. Patricia Claparols, Dr. Robert Eustaquio, Dr. Ermelinda Galang, Dr. Sandra Hernandez, Dr. Leonor Lago, Dr. Marilyn Leung, Dr. Crissie Santayana, and Dr. Marina Tan.
I would also like to mention my inspirations in becoming an Orthodontist, my mother, Dr. Concepcion Castro, and her good friend, Dr. Glory Punzalan.
In closing, I leave you with this inspirational quote, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.” This one big step is taking the examinations or university accreditation, and so from then on your journey begins………..
